Chapter Twelve

Amaya’s POV

When I woke up I was surprised to still be wrapped in Fox’s arms. I pulled back just slightly, looking up at him. “How long have I been asleep?”

He placed a hand on my cheek, and looked at me. “About thirty minutes. Are you okay?”

I nodded, “I’m fine. I even think my back is healed.” I gave him a quick kiss on his lips before going to the closet and changing into an oversized shirt and yoga pants. When I walked out, Fox was gone from where he was sitting on the bed. I was shocked to find Bree sitting in my office with Daniel, Kachina, Fox, and Fredrik. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to apologize for my part in what just took place,” Bree said with her head hung slightly.

“Why now? Your apology means nothing after the fact. Why didn’t you vote against punishing me? Or maybe stop LeBlanc from interrupting everyone?” I felt Niamh rise inside me. Fox must have felt it too somehow because he walked over and wrapped his arms around my midsection. Niamh immediately fell back, purring quietly. “The only reason you’re here is because you found out what I’ve done to help you and your clan. It’s a little too late for your apology.”

Bree looked down at her hands, “I know. But I am sorry and thankful. These first few years as queen have been difficult, mainly because of the hunters, but you helped with that without wanting compensation or thanks.”

“Because it’s my duty as Queen to ensure our kind does not have to suffer at the hands of hunters.”

“I would like for Maverick to join Storm Industries, as a way to contribute to your cause.”

“No,” I held my hand up as she started to interrupt me, “He has a very good and necessary position at the DOD.”

She nodded her understanding, “Maybe once his time is up at the DOD then.”

“We can certainly revisit the issue. Now if you don’t mind, I need to train my mate,” I walked out, pulling Fox by the hand. We almost ran into Josie, who looked completely panicked. “Jos, what’s wrong?”

She swallowed hard and glanced around, “I met my mate.”

“Really? That’s great! Wait, who is it?”

“It’s not great. Not great at all,” her eyes darted around again.

“Why not? Who is it, Jos?”

“Little mate, where’d you run off to?” I heard a familiar voice shout.

“You have to hide me,” she said running behind me, “Or order him to leave me alone.”

I chuckled, “There’s nowhere I can hide you that he won’t find you, you know that.”

“Then call Maca Ánwíg so I can call lámh fhèin and win, so I don’t have to be mates with him.”

“You know that’s not how it works, little mate,” her mate said as he came around the corner.

I grinned widely when I saw who it was, “Maverick?”

“You know him?” Josie said from behind me.

“He’s the one that helped me bring down Kemp and Murphy. Bree actually just requested he be allowed to join Storm Industries.”

“Please tell me you said no,” Jos whined.

Maverick patted his heart as if she wounded him, “Oh come on, little mate, you don’t mean that,” he laughs when she growls.

“I did say no, but just because his position at the DOD has proven to be valuable.”

“See, little mate, there’s still hope.”

Josie growled, “Come on Josie. He doesn’t seem that bad,” Fox says.

“Oh stuff it Grey. You don’t know shit,” Josie said, shoving him toward Maverick, “If you like him so much, you can mate with him, and Amaya and I can grow old and wrinkly together.”

I laughed, “Can you two give us a minute?”

Fox smiled and gave me a kiss on my forehead, “Yeah. I’ll meet you in the gym.”

Maverick tried to move toward Josie, but she put out her arm, “Try it and you’ll never have children.”

Maverick laughed, but held his hands up in surrender. Josie and I headed to her office. “Okay so what’s your deal Moreau?”

“My deal, Wardwell? My deal? I don’t know this guy. Why should I just accept being mates with him? For all I know he’s the main reason you were whipped today,” she whispered.

“Why are you whispering? He can’t hear you in here,” she rolled her eyes at me, “And he wasn’t the reason. King LeBlanc was the reason. He had the votes in his pocket when he walked in.”

“Okay but I still don’t trust him.”

“You should definitely give him a hard time, but he had my back in Arlington.”

“Fine. I’ll give him a chance, but with a name like Maverick I’m not expecting much.”

I smiled at her, “Give him hell. You know you might be able to convince Daniel he needs to fight glacadh before letting him mate.”

She gave me a sly smile, “I might just do that.”

“Come on, let’s see what our dumbasses are up to,” I said heading out of her office.

We walked into the gym to see Maverick holding Fox in a headlock, “Maybe I should consider keeping him around a little longer.”

I shoved Josie gently, “Why are you assaulting my mate?”

The guys looked up at us, “He said you were training him for glacadh, so while you guys were busy I thought I’d show him some moves.”

Josie and I laughed, “What moves are those exactly? How to fight in the WWE?” Josie asks, still giggling.

Maverick let go of Fox and stalked over to us, “You think you can do better, little mate?”

Josie raised her chin defiantly with a smirk, “What do you say to a little one on one?”

“If you think you can handle it,” Maverick shrugged.

I bit back a laugh, and slipped my hand into Fox’s, giving it a squeeze. We sat down on the edge of the mats while Josie and Maverick circled one another on the center mats. “This should be good, huh?”

I smiled at Fox, “Very good.”
